Its the second full week of June, normally the climbing rose that we have trained to flower just outside our bedroom window is in its first bloom. At this time of year we like to cut the odd rose bud and put it in the little vase that was specially blown to hold one flower head. Truly it smells of summer and the delicate petals make a pretty focal point on the kitchen table.

This year, summer has been so late that there are only closed green buds on the rose, what to do. A short walk with the dog reminded me that this late English summer has resulted in an unusual mix of flowers for the time of year. Some careful picking of a few flowers and rather more grasses seemed like the inspired thing to do. Walking back to the cottage I realised that this is a rather familiar situation at Cholesburys. You want more of a favorite English vintage print but you just cant find it, you look around you, you mix and match from the bottom of the textiles cupboard with some different recycled leathers, try a couple of different leather finishes, you select the lining to compliment the colour pallet and you have just created a sandal solution from the materials to hand. What an idea, probably rather old fashioned.. . .Alexeihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04753324408885294927noreply@blogger.com0Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire HP23, UK51.756370999999987 -0.649429899999972826.234336499999987 -41.958023899999972 77.278405499999991 40.659164100000027tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6984036832870859891.post-8434214292597034502013-03-21T22:57:00.000+00:002013-03-21T22:57:51.972+00:00Narrow Fitting Sandals

London Fashion Week for Autumn Winter 13 has come and gone and left food for thought; at Cholesburys Spring Summer
13 is waking up. The natural Spring cycle is working; weather changing,
days lengthening, flower bulbs pushing up toward the sun.

Over the
winter outside the studio the old school gym floor board deck has mudded
up. The mud and leaves stop the wood from drying out on windy days.
Years ago Will had saved the oak when he heard that a school gym was
being demolished for a new building. As can be the case he knew the
value of the old narrow gauge planks (nice and thick like they used to make them) but didn't have a use for them.
Luckily an empty horse box in a local field provided a dry store until one evening in deep studio design discussion on the phone Will mentioned "what about a verandah outside, you know for drinking cups of tea on sunny days". Nearly a year after that Will was planing the planks to a near even thickness and sorting out the ones that were, shall I say slightly too aged.

When you appreciate the history of something and it comes into your care you feel responsible and can't help thinking about it. I knew I needed to give the wood a really good clean, being interested in materials I know that if the surface of oak is really clean it will just dry out, resist rot and take on a fine silver to dark colour over time, no need for paints or oils. I also knew that if the mud and leaves were left it was just a matter time before the last page in the history of my "verandah" would be that it just rotted away. So in tune with the Spring Summer 13 season I swept the leaves off, hauled out my pressure washer and set to work blasting off the mud and grime of many feet. Half way through the difference was so striking that I took a photo of the clean easy drying new look, ahh I thought the new colours for Cholesburys Spring Summer 13!
A little bit less breathless than an athlete but just as elated to make the Ethical Fashion Forum Source Awards 2012 final. Cholesburys has been shortlisted as a finalist with other Ethical designers and brands in the INNOVATION category:

Recognising new talent in fashion design and textiles design, combined with innovation in sustainability terms.

You can read all about it here but the really exciting thing is to be shortlisted along with brands that I respect like Patagonia and people like Orsola de Castro, Saffia Minney (of People Tree), Vivienne Westwood, Katherine Hamnett and
sustainable style icons Livia Firth, Erin O'Conner, Lily Cole and Emma Watson all of whom I admire. So for a little company I am feeling rather good about hand making my sandals in England in the right way.

A couple of pots of tea, a bit of a think and some surprisingly good foot tracing has just made life a bit happier for me – and for a lovely customer in Australia.

In days gone by, you went to a shop in the high street, picked out a shoe or sandal that caught your eye, slipped it on, took a few paces… and if it felt good and was the right size, you bought it. Easy… but in today’s virtual world, you can browse but you can’t try things on. You can’t touch it, feel it or see it on the end of your leg – and that’s just how it is.

But that was not good enough for a lovely customer in Australia, who wanted a pair of Cholesburys Brigitte sandals in preparation for summer. Determined to ensure she bought the right size, she measured her foot and sent us the dimensions. Sounds simple, doesn’t it?

But as always with footwear, it’s all in the detail. Unbeknownst to her, if she used a large pencil to draw around her foot, the size comes up large. If she sat down or stood up to do it, she would get two different results.

So, I pointed out the pitfalls, and second time around she used a finer 2mm lead to get a closer result. She cared as much about getting the fitting as right as I do – and that just gave me the gnawing feeling that surely I can help to make the process of selecting Cholesburys shoe sizes online just that little bit easier.

A few pots of tea and bit of head scratching later, the ideas (as well as the tea) were starting to flow.

How about templates that you can print off and measure your feet on? And how about a short video showing useful tips and tricks for how to trace your feet so that the measurement is accurate. Of course, this isn’t going to be perfect, but it’s not an inconsiderable step towards to improving what we do. And it seems to have turned my gnawing feeling into a warm and happy one.

Right then: one set of templates and a short film coming up! (After I’ve put the kettle on, of course!)
Alexeihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04753324408885294927noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6984036832870859891.post-57714922322938065072011-10-02T14:03:00.000+01:002012-12-13T12:59:07.348+00:00Beautiful ladies' sandals, handmade in England

At Cholesburys, our aim is not only to breathe a little bit of life back into the footwear industry here in England, but also to do so with shoes that look and feel better because they have been lovingly made by hand and have high ethical and environmental credentials.

Our handmade sandals are a great example.

At the heart of each pair is a discarded English floral print or vintage designer fabric that we've sought out and selected. We source all of these fabrics in person, and buy a lot in a brilliant local shop that's something of an antique department store.

As well as selecting prints for their look, our choices are shaped by the quality and feel of the fabric, and the story behind it. Sometimes these textiles are pre-loved furnishing fabrics, while others are ‘old-but-new’ designer prints – such as the vintage 1960s Liberty of London fabric we found unused on a roll.

The leather straps on our sandals are made from recycled boots and coats, and about a third of the rubber in the sole is recycled too.

If you've not cast your eyes over them yet, please take a look – and feel free to let us know what you think...Alexeihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04753324408885294927noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6984036832870859891.post-78042186560090352552011-10-01T16:56:00.000+01:002011-10-01T16:56:41.541+01:00News and views from CholesburysWelcome to Cholesburys brand new blog – somewhere that will soon become home to a host of news and views relating to everything we do and care about.Alexeihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04753324408885294927noreply@blogger.com0
